Peonies of China, May 2006

The Experimental Station of the Beijing Forestry University.

Since 2003, Prof. Cheng Fangyun and his students started to build up a peony collection here in the north of Beijing, just on the foot of the mountains. Here is plenty of space for the establishment of a collection of mother plants for breeding experiments. I have seen both subspecies of Paeonia rockii (rockii and atava) planted out in rows, fine flowering size plants of Paeonia qiui, a number of selected western Lutea-hybrids, and many herbaceous peonies too. The first own-bred seedlings were showing up already. Some first own breedings are waiting for the introduction,... Ii was impressed by the good work done by Prof. Cheng and his students here!
