Ulf Eliasson from Göteborg/Sweden on June 28, 2006:

Dear Carsten, This peony is grown in the Botanical Garden of Gothenburg under the name of 'Reserva Plena'. Do you know anything about this cultivar?

Dear Ulf, I have never heared this name, but I will place your question into my news-section. Maybe somebody has an explanation. I don't know this cultivar. kind regards Carsten

Mayn thanks to Cheng Fangyun, who made the picture of the moment, when I stood in front of my first Paeonia decomposita on the slope in Sichuan!

Thanks to my friend in Beijing, I got today the thesis from an interesting dissertation. The publication above seems to be the first on the two different subspecies of Paeonia rockii. It was published in 1993 as dissertation. It contains for subsp. lanceolata a latin diagnosis and the type. But - as well as later Hong Tao's publication, it refers to the entire publication of Haw & Lauener and not to the page where they describe Paeonia suffruticosa subsp. rockii. Is this now a nomen nudum?? Maybe people more trained in taxonomy can answer this question. To my amateur understanding this name has priority over the name linyanshanii one year later published by Hong Tao. But - why didn't any of the chinese publications of Hong Tao or Hong Deyuan refer to this??

25.06.2006 Wahrscheinlich verstehen diesen Film nur die Teilnehmer der Reise nach China, aber falls jemand mal einen Weckruf braucht Probably only the participiants of any of the Peonies of China tours will understand this film, but if somebody needs a wakeup call from Roger ... 16.06.2006 Ich habe den von Irmtraud Rieck in ihrem Artikel in der Gartenpraxis erwähnten Artikel von Hong Tao aus dem Jahre 2005 gefunden: Zhu, Xiangyun1; Hong, Tao2 (2005): Validation and neotypification of Paeonia rockii subsp. linyanshanii (Paeoniaceae). Taxon, Volume 54, Number 3, August 2005, pp. 806-807(2), Publisher: International Association for Plant Taxonomy [Abstract: "Paeonia rockii subsp. linyanshanii T. Hong & G. L. Osti" was not validly published in 1994 because it was assigned to "Paeonia rockii (S. G. Haw & L. A. Lauener) T. Hong & J. J. Li", which was not then a validly published name. Although the species name was validated in 1998 as Paeonia rockii (S. G. Haw & L. A. Lauener) T. Hong & J. J. Li ex D. Y. Hong, P. rockii subsp. linyanshanii has still not been validly published, although P. suffruticosa var. linyanshanii J. J. Halda was validly published in 1997. P. rockii subsp. linyanshanii is validated here, based on Handa's varietal name, and, because the holotype was not preserved, a neo-type is designated. Keywords: PAEONIACEAE; PAEONIA ROCKII SUBSP. 13.06.2006 Mit deutscher Zusammenfassung - der neue Artikel von Hong DY über Paeonia corsica. The new article of Hong De-yuan on Paeonia corsica was published: Hong De-Yuan, Wang Xiao-Quan (2006) The identity of Paeonia corsica Sieber ex Tausch (Paeoniaceae), with special reference to its relationship with P. mascula (L.) Mill., Feddes Repertorium, Volume 117, Issue 1-2, 2006. Pages 65-84, Copyright © 2006 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim, Abstract, it is online available [Abstract: The taxonomy of the genus Paeonia in central Mediterranean islands has been controversial, with number of recognized taxa changing greatly from one species without infraspecific division to three species or five infraspecific taxa in one species, and with the number of synonyms as great as 30. In the present work, the taxonomic history is thoroughly reviewed and a taxonomic revision is made based on extensive field work, chromosome observation, population sampling, examination of a large amount of herbarium specimens, and subsequent statistic analysis. As a result of the studies P. corsica Sieber ex Tausch, an ignored specific name, is restored at specific rank, and the species is found distinct from all the three subspecies of P. mascula in this region in having mostly nine (vs 10) leaflets/segments, shorter hairs (1.5 mm vs 3 mm long) on carpels, rather densely holosericeous (vs glabrous or very sparsely hirsute) on the lower surface of leaves. It is a diploid, confined to Corsica France), Sardinia (Italy), Ionian Islands and Akarnania Province of Greece, whereas P. mascula is a tetraploid, widely distributed from Spain to Turkey and Iraq, but not in Corsica, Sardinia and W Greece. In addition, type specimens of four taxa are designated, and 29 botanic names are listed as synonyms of P. corsica in this paper. Received: 8 November 2005 ] [local copy html scan]

09.06.2006 The first flower of a new seedling: P. peregrina pollinated by Paeonia mascula subsp. bodurii pollen, done by Jim Waddick, the plant was grown by me, yesterday opened the first flower. (In May 2001 I collected pollen on the natural site of P. mascula ssp. bodurii in the Canakkale prov. of Turkey. A handful of friends in the USA, Canada and Germany were sent fresh pollen – and the first seeds arrived me from Dr. James Waddick of Kansas City in August the same year! The seeds showed germination in March 2002), more infos here.
