Paeonia lutea Delavay and Franch. var. ludlowii Stern and Taylor in Bot. Mag. n.s.t. 209,1953 Large glabrous shrub 2m in height, and able to reach 2.4m in cultivation. Annual twigs papery, yellowish-green, occasionally with red blotches. Leaves biternate, deeply toothed, yellowish-green. Branches bear 2-5 large yellow flowers with 5-8 petals and 1-3 glabrous carpels. The flowering period is April and seeds, large, black and oblate, ripen in August(Fig. 9). Originally found in Tsanpo Gorges of south-east Tibet, also distributed on slopes at 2700-3300m in Linzhi and Milin. m the former the subalpine evergreen coniferous forests mainly contain Picea likiangensis var. balfouriana and Abies spectabilis, and herbage such as Iris tectorum, Taraxacum mongolicum and Ranunculus japonicus. The quality of the mountainous podzolic soil and brown earth ranges from sandy loam to light-textured soil with pH 4.9-5.7 and high organic content. In Milin brulee Paeonia lutea is able to form the dominant species. In Linzhi, annual mean temperature is 9.3 °C, minimum 0.4°C, maximum 15.8°C°; annual mean precipitation 650mm; frostfree period 180 days. |
