Szechuan ------ Yunnan: ---------- This species was discovered in Likiang Hsien, northeastern Yunnan and is easily recognised by its red flowers usually about 10 cm. in diameter, surrounded by a large persistent involucre consisting of 5 suborbicular sepals and 8 to 12 ovate or lanceolate bracts. Its range of distribution extends northward to southwestern Szechuan and westward to northern and central Yunnan. This species is usually found in thickets or under forests at 2600 to 3600 metres in altitude. |

The Paeonia delavayi complex, a group of woody peonies endemic to China, is problematic because of the lack of agreement among the taxonomic treatments of the group. Some taxonomists recognize one species with three infraspecific taxa, while others accept only two species, and yet others accept three species with two infraspecific taxa. The present paper is based on extensive field observations, population sampling, and analysis of certain characters. The results show that the complex is extremely variable both within and between populations in the number, length, and width of leaf segments and in number, size, and color of all the floral parts. This variation is continuous, and there is no correlation between the characters. Only one species, P. delavayi, is recognized, without infraspecific taxa. Paeonia lutea, P. potaninii, and their infraspecific names are reduced to synonymy of P. delavayi. Paeonia delavayi Franch., Bull. Soc. Bot. France 33: 382. 1886. TYPE: China. Paeonia delavayi Franch. in Bull. Soc. Bot. Fr., XXXIII. 382,1886. Glabrous shrub, 1.5m in height. The annual twigs are herbaceous, dark purplish-red. The leaves are ternate bipinnate, each secondary leaflet is ovate or broadly ovate, greyish-white on the under side with deep clefts forming lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate lobes. 2-5 red or purplish-red flowers with 9- 12 petals, at the apex of the stem or in leaf axils. Filament dark purple. A fleshy disc embraces the base of 2-5 glabrous carpels; purple stigmas. The flowering period is in May and seeds ripen July to August(Fig. 7). P. delavayi is found in clusters of miscellaneous trees or bushes on grassy sunny mountain slopes at 2300-3700m in Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet. Yulong Snowy Mountain Natural Conservation District in Yunnan is chosen as an example to describe its ecological conditions. The weather is influenced by the south-west monsoon. The massif represented by Lijiang Basin (elevation 2416m) is classified as southern temperate climate. There is a clear division between wet and dry periods, without high temperatures and with a short hot period in summer, sufficient photostage in winter and spring, a long winter (135 days) and spring succeeding to autumn (230 days) with no summer. The climate from river valleys to mountain tops differs dramatically. The annual mean temperature in Lijiang is 12.6 C, at 2750m 9.7°C. maximum 26.8°C, minimum -9.6°C; the annual mean precipitation 1708mm. The corres-ponding data for the elevation of 3240m are 5.5°C, 18.8°C, -11.8°C, 1588mm. At the elevation of 2400-3000m there is mountain red earth covered by 20-30cm of surface humus in forests. The plant community consists of an arboreal layer, Pinus densata, Pinus armandii, Picea likiang-ensis and Betula sp.; shrubs. Rhododendron yunnanensis, Quercus monimotricha, Acanthopanax senti-cosus, Lonicera sp., Cotoneaster acutifolius, Coriaria sinica, Viburnum cylindricum, Berberis jamesiana var. leucocarpa and Viburnum corylifolium; and herbaceous plants, Pteridium revolutum, Dipsacus asper and Oxalis griffitha. |
