North of the Forbidden City in Beijing is the Jingshan-Park, the „Coal Hill“.
A very fine and popular park with a huge collection of fine tree peonies, many very old and more than 2 meters tall shrubs, but also a large collection of japanese tree peony cultivars (planted in fall 2003, just before the Peonies of China 2004 trip, now hundreds of medium large young shrubs in their first real florescence). At my first visit in 2004 we had only time for the first quarter around the hill, from the southern to the eastern gate, now we walked almost all around the hill, finding more and more delicate flowers in bloom. Maybe this is the best public collection in Beijing – or is the Botanical Garden better??
