Peonies of China, May 2006

21_del1 index 23_lud2

Along the road, under giant chestnut-trees and with sharp limits (to the north by the road, to the south by the slope of a dry rocky mountain, to the east by housing, to the west by dryer open areas), mostly in shady and wetter conditions. Almost all flowers had only one carpel, ther were many small seedling plants, and we have seen wholes, where plants have been dug very recently. Prof. Hong says, the site has become larger since his last visit, but it looks to me very endangered. One of 3 remaining natural sites. Some shrubs measured 3 x 6 meters, with hundreds of stems, some were young.
