28.05.2001 Ich war in den letzten Tagen viel unterwegs, deshalb heute nur diese kurze Textnachricht. Ich bin ziemlich geschlaucht. Am Mittwoch habe ich den polnischen Pflanzenfreund Eugeniusz Radziul besucht. Er hat eine atemberaubende Pflanzensammlung, auch mit verschiedenen Paeonien. Marlene Ahlburgs Rockii-Hybride 'Vater's Liebling' stammt von ihm, ich dachte, er hätte auch eine größere Zucht, aber es war nicht so. Am Donnerstag fuhr ich über Dresden und Prag zuerst nach Pruhonice, wo ich mir diesen herrlichen Park ansah. Aber leider fand ich die Paeoniensammlung nicht. Zwei Tage später traf ich in Erfurt den Direktor des Botanischen Instituts, Dr. Blazek, von dem ich erfuhr, wo die Sammlung ist – beim nächsten Mal. Gegen Nachmittag traf ich bei Josef Halda im Adlergebirge ein, wo ich seine umfangreiche Sammlung von Paeonien-Wildarten in voller Blüte fand. Bilder werden folgen. Ich konnte mit Josef bis in die tiefe Nacht Gedanken austauschen. Es war ein sehr gelungener Tag. Josef sagte zu, zu unserem nächsten Treffen eine Vorlesung zu halten, und außerdem lieh er mir einen ganzen Ordner voller Dias von Paeonien am Naturstandort, ziemlich alle Arten. Demnächst hier online! Freitag Mittag war ich wieder zu Hause zum Kräfte sammeln. Am Samstag fuhr ich früh zur Iris- und Pfingstrosenschau auf der EGA in Erfurt, wo auch die Jahrestagung der Iris-Fachgruppe stattfand. Es gab genügend Zeit für intensive Gespräche mit verschiedenen Pflanzenfreunden aus der GdS und vom Team der EGA. Ab 2003 wird die Fachgruppe Paeonien zweijährlich ihre Jahrestagung in Erfurt durchführen, begleitet von einer Paeonien-Schau. Das Erfurter Team ist sehr engagiert, die Örtlichkeiten sind geradezu ideal, Erfurts Lage ist sehr verkehrsgünstig zentral gelegen, und vom Können der Erfurter Floristen konnte ich mich schon in diesem Jahr überzeugen. Einfach Klasse! Sonntag früh düste ich weiter nach Fürth, wo ich gerade rechtzeitig zu Irmtraud Rieck's Vortrag über die Anzucht von Paeonien aus Samen kam. Anschließend referierte Hans Esleben über die Vermehrung von Strauchpfingstrosen-Sorten. Da Herr Hertle seinen Garten noch einmal für die Besuches der Seminars öffnete, konnte ich (hoffentlich diesmal mit funtionierender Kamera) einige Bilder seiner Saunders-, Daphnis- und Anderson-Hybriden schießen. Wie der Zufall es so will, lernte ich einen jungen Gartengestalter kennen, der im Künstlerschloss in Hermsdorf bei Dresden angestellt ist, wo gerade eine Pfingstrosen-Sammlung aufgebaut wird. Ich werde mich freuen, helfen zu können. Sorry, the english translation laterI was always on the road through the last weeks, for this reason only a short sum-up. Saturday morning I drove to Iris- and peony exhibition in Erfurt, where the Iris-group of our perennial society held her annual meeting. It was time for interesting talks to many people of the Society and the team of The EGA (the Erfurt Garden Exhibition) From 2003 on every second year our peony-group will hold their meeting there and we will organise Peony Shows on this very perfect place. They have good localities for shows, the team is very engaged, Erfurt is located centrally in Germany and has good traffic conditions and the florists from the EGA demonstrated perfectly, what they can. Sunday morning I drove to Fuerth, where Friedrich Hertle had organised another peony- symposium. After the interesting lectures of Irmtraud Rieck and Hans Esleben we were invited for an hour to Mr. Hertle's garden, where I took pictrues of many Saunders-, Daphnis- and Anderson-hybrids. And as the fortune comes, I met a young garden-decigner, who is employed at an 'Artist-Castle' (Künstlerschloss) in Hermsdorf near Dresden, where they started to compile a peony – collection. I will be please to help them, as I can. Altogether a very perfect weekend.

23. 05. 2001 Ein paar weitere Bilder von Hermann Fuchs, zusammen mit Bildern meiner eigenen Pflanzen. Gerade Wittmanniana ist ziemlich heikel, da jeder denkt, etwas richtiges zu haben. Aber nicht alles, was nicht eindeutig Mlokosewitschi ist, ist Wittmanniana. Da aber Hermann Fuchs' Pflanze die gleiche Blattzeichnung hat, wie meine aus Sotschi, und die Ortsangaben mit der Literatur übereinstimmen, könnten diese Bilder die echte Wittmaniana zeigen. Darunter Hermann Fuchs' Tomentosa und mein Sämling von Christian. Demnächst noch Bilder aus dem Garten Ahlburg. Irre schöne Blüten! Zu guter letzt wurde meine Wittmaniana (von Klose) als Hybride entlarvt. Laub wie Mollis, also nähm mer ma an... daß es eine WITxMOL Hybride ist. Dank an Peter Ries für den Tip!! Especially Wittmanniana is very odd, because everybody thinks to have the TRUE one, and most are everything else between. The leaf shape of H. Fuchs' plant and the plant from Sotchi which I (& Dick) purchased from Paul Christian looks the same, and the description fits to Kemularia (did you know, that the complete name is Ljubov Manucharovna Kemularia-Nathadze , born 1891 in Tbilissi?). Among Fuchs' pictures are some of P. tomentosa, I have this plant too as seedling, maybe the first pictures on the web. Pictures from the Ahlburg garden will follow soon. Crazy cute flowers!! Finally my 'Wittmaniana' has been determined by my visitors last weekend as hybrid with the leaves of P. mollis. Fine plants, grows well, blooms rich. Thanks to the Klose Nursery for this wonderful hybrid, where I have bought it as Paeonia wittmaniana. And thnaks to Peter Ries for the hint!

22. 05. 2001 Ein paar weitere Bilder von Hermann Fuchs, Bilder von Leo Smit's Paeonia mlokosewitschi and neue Bilder von Paeonia macrophylla. Ich war in den letzten Tagen sehr viel auf Reisen, habe innerhalb einer Woche 19 Filme belichtet, darunter Rockii-Hybriden in Thüringen und Sachsen-Anhalt, die Sammlung Ahlburg und die ersten Blüten im Arboretum Ellerhoop sowie im Garten von Michael Monthofer. Die Mloko-Bilder werden demnächst ergänzt durch verschiedene Hybriden, die häufig auch sehr schön sind, aber fälschlicherweise als echte Mlokos verkauft wurden. Ab morgen mache ich Polen und Tschechien unsicher, und am Wochenende fahre ich nach Erfurt, (Fürth und Hof, wenn alles klappt). . Within the last 7 days I have made a lot of travels and I exposed altogether 19 Films á 36 pictures, among them 2 breeders with rockii-hybrids in Thuringia and Sachsen-Anhalt, the Ahlburg-collection, the first flowers of the year from the Arboretum Ellerhoop near Hamburg (with 1500 tree peonies) and the garden of Mr. Monthofer. The Mloko-pictures will be followed by different garden-hybrids, which were originally bought as true Mlokos, but nevertheless maybe very nice plants. From tomorrow on I will travel through Poland and the Czech Republic, and on the weekend I will visit Erfurt (and maybe Fürth and Hof, if my time and health permits it).

Ich nutze die Gelegenheit auch gleich, die Spezies-Abteilung auf den neuesten Stand zu bringen. Die erste „Art“ ist Paeonia x lagodechiana. Today I'm starting with the implication of a number of 64 pictures kindly donated by the german peony-collector Hermann Fuchs, who worked his lifetime for the BG of Hof in Bavaria. The first pictures are two different types of P. x lagodechiana, Paeonia kesrouanensis and Paeonia arietina, maybe the first time on the web!

14.05.2001 Das Treffen in Kolkwitz war ein voller Erfolg. Wir hatten am Samstag 50 Gäste aus allen Teilen Deutschlands und aus den Niederlanden und Belgien in unserem Garten. Das Wetter war prächtig und das Programm klappte wie am Schnürchen. Nach einer Kahnpartie im Spreewald und einer Führung durch den Burger Arzneipflanzengarten gab es eine Diskussionsrunde zu Fragen der Organisation der Fachgruppe Päonien. Es wurden für die zukünftigen Aufgaben 2 Arbeitskreise (Ausstellungen und Sorten) gegründet. Danach gab es Diavorträge von mir (Pfingstrosen in meinem Garten & P. parnassica und P. mascula ssp. bodurii am Wildstandort), von Andre Bourgonje über die Gärtnerei Rivière in Frankreich und von Johann Joschko über seine Reisen zu Wildstandorten in Spanien, Sardinien, Griechenland, Kreta, Rhodos, Frankreich, Italien ... Die Bilder waren phantastisch, zum ersten Mal sah ich Bilder von P. coriacea, P. broteroi, P. clusii, P. humilis ... Anschließend referierte Hans Esleben über Pfingstrosen in Topfkultur. Am Sonntag erlebten wir noch eine Führung durch den von Hermann Pückler angelegten Branitzer Park. Ich danke allen, die bei der Vorbereitung und Durchführung des Treffens geholfen haben und danke allen, die den weiten Weg in die Lausitz nicht gescheut haben. On Saturday we had 50 visitors from all parts of Germany and from the Netherlands and Belgium in our garden. The weather was very fine and the programm went without problems. After a boat-tour through the Spree-forest in Burg we visited the Medicinal-plant-Garden in Burg. On the evening we discussed the organisational matters of the German Peony Group and founded 2 work-groups: Exhibitions and Peony-sorts. After this we had slideshows from me (Peonies in my garden and pictures of P. parnassica and P. mascula ssp. bodurii in the natural habitats), Andre Bourgonje (The Peony-nursery of Rivière in France) and Johann Joschko (Trips to peony-habitats in Spain, France, Italy, Sardinia, Crete, Rhodos, Greece ..). The pictures were fantastic, I saw pictures of P. coriacea, P. broteroi, P. humilis & P. clusii ... for the first time. Finally we had a lecture of Hans Esleben on Tree Peonies in pots. On Sunday we visited the landscape park of Branitz, one of the oldest and best german parks in the english style. I'd like to thank all, who have helped to organise this meeting and I thank all, who have not hesitated to make the long trip to East Germany.
