after I run a contest for the 'Best Peony 2002' since 5 months in the german list on y!groups and in the german peony group, I'd like to publish the first results here. Everybody was asked to vote for maximum 10 sorts or species, which he GROWS IN HIS/HER GARDEN. No phantasy-peonies from catalogs or books, I wanted only votes with personal experience. Beside the top-performers I asked for floppers too.

Everybody is kindly invited to join the contest from his/her own experience. But I regret that the 3 Rockii's from Thuringia will only be shipped to members with a residence inside the EEC. The non-european votes will be counted separetely (if it makes sense) and all results will be published on paeon.de (in June)

Please send your votes to this list or to me privately until Wednesday next week. Or if you take part on our meeting next weekend (May 31-June 1), I would also accept written votes.

19. May 2002 2 interessante neue Veröffentlichungen aus Italien: Two very interesting scientific papers from Italy:

12.05.2002 Besuch bei Josef Halda, die früheren Formen von P. mlokosewitschii und P. caucasica waren in Vollblüte, die späteren, die ich voriges Jahr gesehen habe, noch nicht. Es gibt ziemlich deutliche Unterschiede zwischen einer abchasischen Form und einer ajarischen (adzharischen) Form, sicher gibt es noch viele andere Formen von P. mlokosewitschii und viele Übergangsformen zu P. caucasica. Halda hat in Nord-Burma wild wachsende Strauchpäonien entdeckt und wird in diesem Jahr wieder dort sammeln. Außerdem will er 3 Monate Mittelasien-China und irgendwann zwischendurch Kamtschatka besuchen. Am 1. Juni hält er in Brüggen auf unserem Treffen seinen Vortrag „Wild Peonies in China“ Visit to Josef Halda, finding to earlier forms of P. mlokosewitschii and P. caucasica in full bloom. There are remakable differences between the abkhasian and the ajarian (adzharian) form. Josef Halda will hold a slideshow about „Wild Peonies in China“ on my peony group's meeting on June 1^st in Brüggen.
