27. April 2002 besuchte ich zusammen mit Denis Wilson aus Australien
die Gärtnerei
Rivière
im Departement Drome in Frankreich. Die Gärtnerei wird von
Jean-Luc Rivière betrieben, sein Vater, Michel Rivière
hat sich zurückgezogen. Wir haben ihn am Nachmittag in seinem
Privatgarten besucht.
On April 27 2002 I wvisited together with Denis Wilson the Pivoines
Rivière
in Crest / France. The nrusery is been operated by Jean-Luc Rivière,
his father, Michel Rivière has retired. We visited him in his
private garden on the afternoon the same day.

4. Juni 2002 our annual peony meeting in Brueggen was held on this weekend. We had more than 50 visitors from 7 countries including Gian Lupo Osti from Italy, Denis Wilson from Australia and Josef Halda from the Czech Rep. and Dr. Fritz Neuhauser from Vienna in Austria
The sunshine was amazing and we had the opportunity to visit three peony gardens (the Ungerechts family's garden in Mönchengladbach, Mr. Tetzlaffs plantation near Düsseldorf and the garden of Harrie de Vries near Eindhoven in the Netherlands).
On the Saturday evening I showed almost 200 slides of my spring-peony tour through Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland and Austria, showing the first pictures of Camillo Schneider's peonies, which he brought back after WW1 from there and are to be found as mature bushes in Vienna nowadays. In special the pictures of these phantastic tree peonies were so beautiful, that we decided to organise a meeting in their blooming time next year in Vienna (between May 1 and 4).
On Sunday Josef Halda showed pictures of peonies in their natural habitats in China and their companion plants. Josef almost caused me a heart attack, because he came very late on the Saturday evening after a traffic accident (he hit a deer in Bavaria), but nothing serious happened.
After the end of the meeting I took the opportunity to visit Leon Doyen, a peony collector in the near of Maastricht in Holland, who has almost every peony species in his garden and many interesting own crosses.
On Monday we couldn't resist to load our car with almost 20 potted species peonies in the nursery www.bastin.nl , many from China directly. It is irresitible, if you have the choice between 20 different potted P. mairei or wild lactifloras, though not in bloom, but interesting by the leaf itself.
