PLUTO (God of the Underworld), Nassos Daphnis, New York, Sept. 25, 1987. Seedling #D-363 - double hybrid tree peony. Parentage, self-pollenated. First year bloomed 1976. Very dark red, good stem strength, nice foliage. It is reliable with good amount of bloom. The flower is the best of the very dark hybrids that has ever been produced. The color is so rich that when a ray of light is cast on it, the glow is the color of a stained glass window. It is fragrant, has stamens, seeds and pollen. It blooms in late May. Height five feet. PRINCESS CHIFFON (Domoto-Roy G. Klehm), Klehm Nursery. Seedling #K87-2. Clear medium pink, semi-double tree peony. Parentage: Moutan seedling raised by Toichi Domoto. First bloomed 1987. Good substance with pollen, stamens and seeds, good amount of bloom, fragrant. Excellent stem strength, 3 ft. plus or minus, early bloom, distinct ruffling, good clear pink, large blossoms. Excellent vigor and good foliage. One bud per stem. Bulletin #295.

RHEA BC 3 (Wife of Kronos, mother of Zeus) (Nassos Daphnis, New York), Aug. 24, 1995. Seedling number D-357. Parentage D-127 x S-250 (Moutan) Captain Concubine. First bloomed 1974. Semi-double, bright pink petals bursting out from the center ready to fly into space. It is very luminous, transparent and glowing. Has the quality of a very strong and outgoing presence. Amount of bloom 10-20, good substance, stamens, pollen, no seeds, fragrant and reliable. One bud per stem. Good stem strength, grows 4-5 feet and blooms in late May. Light green foliage, vigorous. ROSALIND ELSIE FRANKLIN (Bill Seidl), Manitowoc, Wisconsin, July 9, 1996. Seedling #SH-158. Parentage (SH-35; Golden Era x Chinese Dragon) x Zephyrus. Hybrid tree peony, first bloomed 1992. Light pink shading darker to rose burgundy flares, filaments, sheath and carpel tips. Similar to Shintenchi but a shade lighter. 6" flowers are single, the 10- 15 petals waved, ruffled and crimped; pleasantly fragrant. 10% of the pollen is well formed and potent on other hybrid t.p.'s. No seed as yet. Blossoms are held upright on stems, but barely above foliage. Compact plant habit: 32" high x 40" wide. Reliable, having bloomed after -23° and -28°F. Winters. Grafts easily: 100% takes (12/12) in 1996. Named in honor of the English researcher (1920-1958, London) whose work in molecular biology helped in the discovery of the double helical structure of the DNA molecule in 1953 for which three male peers received the Nobel Prize in 1962. (It is not awarded posthumously).

ROYAL ROBE (Domoto-Roy G. Klehm), Klehm Nursery. Seedling #K85-01. Royal purple, semi-double tree peony. Parentage: Moutan seedling raised by Toichi Domoto, first year bloomed 1985. It has good substance, with stamens, seeds and pollen, reliable, good amount of bloom and fragrant. Large bloom with internal petal ruffling. Excellent stem strength, 3 ft. plus or minus, early bloom, good foliage and excellent vigor. One bud per stem. Bulletin #295.

RUFFLED SUNSET (David Reath, Vulcan, Michigan), March 1988. Tree peony, seedling #A-226, first bloomed 1980. Parentage Age of Gold x A198 (Golden Isles x Daphnis pollen). Blend of rose and yellow, a single flower with two or more rows of petals with deeper rose flares. Height 36" with good sturdy stems, pod, and pollen fertile. Fragrant. Excellent amount of bloom.
