LIBELLULE (Dessert, 1922) - Double - Flesh. Tall. Pleasant fragrance. Flesh colored flower, marked crimson. Stems stiff. Color good; form fair. M.

LIBERATOR (Saunders, 1940) - Single - Red - Hybrid. Plant of enormous vigor and luxuriant foliage. The bright deep crimson flowers turn somewhat purple with age. Nevertheless a magnificent variety. Albiflora x officinalis. Saunders catalog, 1950-51 gives date 1940. 1938 given in Lists in Bulletins 91 and 129.

LIBERTY (Hollis, 1905) - Double - Pink. Also atrributed to Kelway by some growers. M.

LIBERTY BELLE (Neeley, 1926) - Double - Rose Pink - Midseason. Large and full. Pleasing. List in Bulletin 91.

LIEUTENANT HOBSON (Hollis, 1903) - Jap. - Purple - M.

LIEUT. WARNEFORD, V.C. (Kelway) - Double - Crimson - M.

LIGHTS OUT (Kelsey, 1934) - Double - Pink - Very Late. Big rose pink double, the last to bloom, prolonging the peony season. Beauty and extreme lateness combined. Bulletin 80. List in Bulletin 109.

LILACINA SUPERBA (Buyck, 1842) - Double - Lilac - M.

LILACINA VARIEGATA (Origin unknown) - Double - Flesh-White - M.

LILA EASTWOOD (Franklin, 1942) - Double - Pink - Midseason. Medium tall to tall. Rose type double, dark pink. Good strong stem, compact plant. Shown by Franklin Nurseries, Bulletin 113, page 12. Mr. Franklin's list, and letter, Sept., 1955.

LILLE (Millet, 1902) - Double - Cherry - M.

LILLIAN GUMM (Gumm, 1921) - Double - Pink - Late Midseason. Tall. Very fine fragrance. Very large. Outer petals very large and ruffled, set edgeways to accommodate the great number of crowded center petals arranged in whorls; deep even rose-pink, suffused by chamois from the base of the petals. Vigorous; strong, stiff stems. Excellent foliage. M.

LILLIAN WILD (Wild Bros., 1930) - Double - Flesh - Late Midseason. Tall. Very large, delicate flesh fading pure white. Compact rose type. Good foliage. Stands up well and is a free bloomer. The size of the flower increases with the age of the plant, becoming one of the largest and most double of all peonies. Marie Jacquin seedling. Bulletin 118.

LITTLE BUFFALO (Kelsey, 1939) - Semi-Double - Pink - Early Midseason. Dwarf. Miniature, semi-double. Very interesting due to its dwarf growing habits. Slender red stems. List in Bulletin 109.

LITTLE DORRIT (Saunders, 1949) - Single - Pink - Hybrid. Dwarf plant. Small flowers of very unusual color; salmon with bright red flares. Outside petals light pink. Charmingly dwarf plants. Officinalis x lobata. List in Bulletin 129.

LITTLE GEM (Glasscock, 1940) - Jap. - Black-Red - Early - Hybrid. Small, color black-red, brilliant staminodes black-red, edged yellow. Carpels white, tipped red. Total effect black-red. Form of bud round, stem medium stiff. Foliage, medium light green. Pollen obtained by splitting staminodes. Albiflora Fuyajo x officinalis Jap. Bulletin 80. Note: Fuyajo is not registered (C.B.2000)

LITTLE NELL (Pleas) - Double - Pink - M.

LITTLE PRINCE (Richmond) - Miniature Jap. - Blush - Midseason. Blush with rich yellow centers and a few large blush petals in centers. Richmond's 1952 catalog and 1955 list.

LITTLE SWEETHEART (Brand, 1907) - Double - Hydrangea Pink - Midseason. Small globular flower. A true midget. List in Bulletin 130.

LIVINGSTONE (Crousse, 1879) - Double - Pink - Late. Medium height. Strong and sweet fragrance. Large. Old-rose pink, flaked on a lighter base; a few petals marked with crimson, and an occasional light midrib on outer petals. Very free-flowering; strong stems. Good foliage. M.

LIZBETH (Blacklock) - Double - Pink. Large. Strong growing. Good garden value. Canadian peony. List in Bulletin 93.

LOIS (Sass, 1941) - Double - Medium Pink - Very Early. 26" high. Fragrant. Bomb type of medium size. Very early, in fact the first double chinensis to bloom. Color medium pink. Stems strong but rather dwarf. Bulletin 83.

LOIS KELSEY (Kelsey, 1934) - Double - White - Midseason. A flat flower with long, narrow, deeply cut petals extending from the center like rays of sun. Something out of the ordinary if you prefer odd peonies, as it is distinctly unusual. Lists in Bulletins 91 and 109.

LOIS Q. GAYLE (Wigell, 1944) - Double - Flesh - Late. Mild fragrance. Very attractiv double with broad, flesh guard petals, a collar of yellow staminodes and a center of flesh crown petals. Strong stems. Bulletin 94. Klehm's 1955 catalog lists it as late.

LONGFELLOW (Brand, 1907) - Double - Red - Midseason. Rather dwarf. Fragrance not notable. Large bright crimson, intensified by golden yellow stamens near center; fairly floriferous; strong stems. Excellent foliage. One of the most popular red peonies because of its distinct, fadeless color and general dependability, both for cutting and for garden decoration. It would be better if it bloomed more freely and if the flowers were always symmetrical. M.
