It seems very desirable that the names of the many varieties of Tree Peonies of the past one hundred and forty years should be given a permanent place in this Manual so that they may be available for future students. The varieties marked (* ) are believed to be in commerce or in existence at the present time. Some of the others may exist in old gardens but most are undoubtedly obsolete. Those marked (†) apparently never had any important place and were offered by only one or two nurserymen.
Comments on and corrections to this list are invited. Information is particularly desired on the varieties believed to have been originated in Italy by Casaretto, Burdin, and others, for all attempts to learn something of these men have ended in failure.
