Peonies of China, May 2006

14_vei index 16_dec2

Coming closer to Maerkang somebody has seen on the roadside a flowering Rhododendron and asked for a photo-stop. And what a surprise – there were also peonies. A clear white population, in the bud some plants were light rose coloured. Only one flower on each stem, bud some very small buds in the leaf axils. Hight lower than the former population, 50-60 cm. Prof. Zhou took a plant for the Herbarium in Beijing, the roots are typical for the species in the wild, in my garden they are thicker and more fleshy. Fine garden form.

Species: Paeonia anomala subsp. veitchii

Location: N-W Sichuan, near Maerkang

Altitude: 2700m

Size of natural population: scattered in scrub on a slope maybe some few plants, maybe more upp the hill
