calot, jacques. He resided at Douai, France, and about 1850 secured the collection of peonies belonging to the Comte de Cussy. During the next twenty years he introduced about twenty new varieties, a few of which are still among our better peonies. If any reader can supply additional information in regard to M. Calot for future editions, it will be much appreciated.

Auguste Calot leitete einen Gartenbaubetrieb. Dem allgemeinen Sortiment fügte er Päonien hinzu, um die er sich persönlich kümmerte. Er kreuzte seine Pflanzen und erhielt eine stattliche Anzahl neuer Sorten, von denen einige heute noch aktuell sind. Die Sammlung des Grafen Cussy brachte frisches Blut in seine eigenen Züchtungen und die Palette seiner Neuheiten wuchs. Zwischen 1835 und 1892 verdanken wir ihm wenigstens 106 registrierte Sorten. Damals entstanden die berühmten Sorten 'Duchesse de Nemours', Philomele', 'Reine Hortense', 'Solfatare' und 'Marie Lemoine'
